Hokkaido Shinkansen Reaches a Major Niseko Milestone
Construction of the Hokkaido Shinkansen has reached another important milestone near Niseko.
On 19 August 2026, the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency confirmed that excavation of the 5,569-metre Hirafu section of the Yotei Tunnel had been completed.
The breakthrough is significant because construction had been repeatedly delayed by enormous underground rock masses. However, excavation is only one stage: internal tunnel and railway infrastructure work is expected to continue until 2028.
The wider 212km Shinkansen extension will connect Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto with Sapporo, including a new station at Kutchan—the principal transport hub for the Niseko resort area.
The original 2030 opening target is no longer achievable. The current official estimate is approximately the end of fiscal year 2038, with further delays still possible.
For Niseko, the completed line should eventually provide faster rail access from both Sapporo and Tokyo. For now, this tunnel breakthrough represents progress—not an imminent opening.
